Business licenses and permits for South Dakota LLCs

After you form your South Dakota LLC, you may need to obtain a business license and/or permit for your business.

Your requirements are determined by the industry you are in and where your South Dakota LLC is located.

Not complying with license and permit requirements may result in penalties and fines.

Need Help?

If you don’t want to make phone calls and do the research to determine your licensing requirements yourself, we recommend using IncFile.

No State Business License

South Dakota does not have a statewide general business license. Instead, licenses and permits are administered by industry and profession or based on the location of your LLC.

Contact the Relevant Government Agency

Your LLC will need to apply for a business license and permit from the government agency which regulates its industry. You can look up the list of government agencies you may need to contact here: SD Office of Economic Development: Business Start-up Packet.

Contact Your County and City

Your LLC may also need to to apply for local permits and meet zoning requirements. To make sure your LLC remains compliant, contact your local county officials:

(note: if a link to your county does not work, please do a search online)

Also, since cities in South Dakota are not compiled in one central site, instead use this phrase and do a search in Google:
“city of {sioux falls} official website” (replace “sioux falls” with your city)
